A memorial service will be held Saturday at Sage Chapel for David Meng ’03, an undergraduate Cornell student who passed away on Dec. 10 in Ithaca.

The Ithaca Police are handling the investigation and the cause of death has not yet been released.

According to one of Meng’s fraternity brothers, his death was “accidental and nothing anyone could ever imagine … not a suicide.” Further information on the location and nature of his death was unavailable.

An economics major in the College of Arts and Sciences, Meng was a member of the Pi Delta Psi fraternity and Chinese Bible Study group. Born and raised in Bayside, Queens, Meng graduated from the Bronx High School of Science.

“He was very friendly and would come up and speak to you no matter who you were,” said Meng’s roommate, Silby Philip ’03. “He was really nice to be with.”

“The memorial service is now because so many students were starting to leave on Dec.10 when the event happened,” said Linda Grace-Kobas, director of Cornell news service.

All students seeking counseling should contact Cornell Psychological Services at Gannett Health Center.

In his memory, some of Meng’s friends are currently trying to purchase a gift for Meng’s younger brother that Meng had wanted to purchase himself as a Christmas present.

The service will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sage Chapel. The Rev. Rick L. Bair, pastor of St. Luke Lutheran Church and minister in Cornell United Religious Work, will preside.
