Cornell outlasts Brown, 2-1, in battle of the goaltenders

PROVIDENCE — Junior Krzysztof Weickowski’s overtime goal led the men’s hockey team past Brown, 2-1, on Friday night.

It was a game of great goaltending and missed oportunities for both clubs. Brown’s netminder Brian Eklund made 25 saves while Cornell’s junior Matt Underhill had 28 saves of his own.

This tone of excellence was set just 30 seconds into the contest, when sophomore defenseman Mark McRae was stonewalled by Eklund on a breakaway.

“Eklund played great. He made some unbelievable saves,” head coach Mike Schafer ’86 said.

Brown was able to get on the scoreboard at 7:11 of the first period when Doug Janjevich slammed home the puck after a scramble in front of Underhill. Tye Korbel and Adam Saunders earned assists on the play.

“[Underhill] made an unbelievable save and the defense didn’t tie up around the net,” Schafer said.

Cornell evened the score just 53 seconds into the middle stanza, as sophomore Sam Paolini tipped in classmated Doug Murray’s shot from the blue line. Rounding out the trio of second-year men, Stephen B
