Bugs Attack Family

After encountering a nest near central campus yesterday a family of four was attacked by a swarm of what has been suggested to be wasps or bees, according to Linda Grace-Kobas, director of Cornell news services.

Location

The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the area near Rand Hall and the Foundry at the north end of the Arts Quad.

Two small children and their mother were treated for multiple stings by Bangs Ambulance. Members of the Ithaca Fire Department, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Cornell University Police Department also responded to the incident.

Grace-Kobas said that the family was visiting Ithaca from Syracuse and encountered the nest while hiking in the area. Bangs Ambulance responded to the incident immediately as routine protocol. Had any member of the family had an allergy to the stings, the incident could have proved fatal.

“We’re just glad that it wasn’t a serious incident and everyone is all right,” Grace-Kobas said.
