Campus Couture

If you’re a celebrity, it’s not enough just to be a one-dimensional talent. We’ve got movie stars hitting the recording studio, rock ‘n rollers who want to direct — it seems as if everybody is struggling to build their own empire, J-Lo style. The newest trend is the celebrity-designed fashion label — great news for those of us who want to dress like our favorite stars, but bad news for those of us living on the salaries of mere mortals.

L.A.M.B. Garter Mini Skirt

Gwen Stefani is one of Hollywood’s reigning style queens and fashion critics are just drooling over her new line, L.A.M.B. Gwen can do no wrong, but unfortunately she is not the easiest icon to imitate. Take this mini-skirt, for example. Gwen would rock it up on stage, but on the Cornell campus it just doesn’t fly.

Mblem Tee

With the risk of sounding like a groupie, I just love Mandy Moore. So obviously, I am super-excited about her new line, Mblem, consisting of soft cotton t-shirts emblazoned with Mandy’s favorite song lyrics. My personal favorite features Blondie’s memorable “gonna getcha getcha getcha” line, but there are others that contain classics from artists like Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell and Marvin Gaye.

Nicky Hilton Star Bag

With sister Paris regularly stealing the spotlight, Nicky Hilton sometimes goes unnoticed. Props to her, though, for attempting to forge a career beyond modeling, partying and acting clueless on television. Her line of bags and tank tops is pretty cute, but if you’re not living off of a hotel chain fortune, affording it is another story.

Pamela Anderson Jeans

Miraculously, Pamela Anderson has somehow found time between starring in a TV show, writing novels, modeling and raising two boys to create a new denim line. I don’t know about you, but I’m probably not going to buy jeans designed by a woman who made a career out of running around in a skimpy bathing suit.

Adidas Missy Elliot Sneakers

Rapper Missy Elliot has teamed up with Adidas to design Respect ME, a collection based on classic Adidas styles. Not only is Missy’s line of sneakers and activewear cute and fun, a portion of the proceeds go to Break the Cycle, a non-profit organization for ending domestic violence.

J-Lo Eyelet Skirt

Jennifer Lopez — the woman just defines the word “empire.” Although most of her spring collection borders on “teenybopper,” there are some cute items to be found. I hate to admit it, but I am loving this cute little eyelet skirt. And, at only $49, I don’t need a movie star income to buy it.
