Tomorrow afternoon in Newman Arena, the men’s basketball team will take its first baby steps toward defending its first Ivy championship in 20 years. The annual Red-White game — a full-court, five-on-five intrasquad scrimmage with referees and all official rules — will begin at 4:30.
While official practice has only been underway for three weeks as of today, the Red’s first game is right around the corner. The Red-White scrimmage will be a final tuneup before opening the season at home against South Dakota next Friday.
“I think it’s just another opportunity to play in a more organized setting with referees, fouls, a shot clock, and stuff like that,” said senior forward Andre Wilkins. “It’s also a way for us to blend with the newer guys and get the team chemistry back amongst ourselves. … And bragging rights, of course.”
While the coaches haven’t let the team know who will be donning red and who will be donning white, Wilkins was fairly certain that the coaches have already split the squad into two units.
“We’ll probably find out [today] or [tomorrow],” he said.
One player who won’t be sporting either uniform will be junior point guard Louis Dale. Dale, suffering from minor a leg injury, will rest Saturday, but it is yet to be seen if he will be ready to go next Friday.
Dale’s backcourt mate, senior Adam Gore, will be sitting tomorrow, as well as for the foreseeable future, as he works his way back from an ACL tear.
