13-0 Women Want One More

Having to live up to the Cornell tradition of women’s polo can be tough — 12 national titles in the last 35 years is quite a feat. This year, though, the Red is playing for more than just tradition. The squad’s fall season consists of 14 matches, 13 of which it has already won. The pressure of going undefeated is well documented, but Cornell has taken it in stride.
“We came into the season as the preseason pick for the No. 1 team in the country, and we have ended up being able to live up to that expectation,” said head coach David Eldredge ’81. “We are obviously very pleased with where we are. The closest anybody has come to us in a victory is nine goals. We feel that we are not just going to rest on our laurels, because there are definitely teams out there that are trying to get better.”
An undefeated fall season is not what this team is ultimately looking for. With such a great start to the season it is important for the Red to have a good offseason, as it makes a run for yet another national title.
“We’ve definitely got some things for us to work on as far as improving,” Eldredge said. “Though [the women are] doing very well and obviously have had a great amount of success, they all know that they’ve got improvement to do in their areas to become the absolute best.”
When asked what the ultimate goal for the season was, Eldredge replied that, “without a doubt,” the Red’s constant motivation is to finish 2008 with nothing less than a National championship.
