Several people were evacuated on Eddy Street early Wednesday morning due to a fire that appeared to start in the kitchen of Miyake. No injuries were reported, according to Dan Tier, assistant fire chief of the Ithaca Fire Department.

Miyake will be closed for “some time,” Tier said.

Ludwig Holmstrom ’12, who lives above the restaurant on Eddy Street, said he was woken by the smell of smoke around 1 a.m.

“We got our stuff and went down on the street,” Holmstrom said, adding that he saw “flames at the back” of the building.

Once outside, Holmstrom said he saw that firemen had “bashed in Miyake’s door with a chainsaw.”

As of 2 a.m., Holmstrom had not been allowed back into the building.

“We’re just going to go to bed at a friend’s place and see tomorrow what happens,” he said.
