Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) and Howard Dean (D-Vt.) will debate at Cornell on Oct. 18, according to a spokesperson from the Cornell Republicans.

Santorum, a former senator, and Dean, a former governor, are likely to generate significant student interest in the event, titled “The Role of Government in a Free Society.” Held less than a month before November’s presidential election, the debate will star two nationally renowned politicians who have themselves flirted with presidential history.

“The purpose of the event is to add to the campus political dialogue and get students excited about the November election,” said Jess Reif ’14, chair of the Cornell Republicans.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Cornell Democrats and Cornell Republicans through the Young America’s Foundation.

“Together, our groups selected these speakers because we feel they will represent both sides of some of the major issues relevant to the November election,” Reif said.
