Ithaca Police Officer Anthony Augustine, who was shot last week while pursuing a suspect in West Hill, was released Thursday from Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, according to an IPD statement. Augustine was shot in the upper left area of his chest on Oct. 11, allegedly by Jamel Booker, who has a long criminal history. Augustine was transported by helicopter to a trauma center for emergency surgery after police arrived on the scene. Augustine underwent a second surgery early Oct. 12 and was expected to make a full recovery. He was in Syracuse recovering from his injuries until Thursday.“Officer Augustine’s survival would not have been possible without the lifesaving treatment he received in the field by his fellow Ithaca Police Officers and Bangs Ambulance Paramedics who were on scene within minutes of the shooting,” the IPD press release stated. The statement also thanked Augustine’s surgeons and Upstate University medical staff for “saving his life” and members of the Ithaca community for their continued “support and prayers for Officer Augustine and his family.”
