Cornell was ranked the 13th best university in the world for the third year in a row by the Academic Ranking of World Universities last week.

Harvard University, Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley were ranked the top three universities in the world this year. Among the top 10 ranked universities, two — the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford — were non-U.S. institutions.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities was launched in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Responding to the criticism of college rankings skeptics, the university has said that its own ranking system differs from others because it determines universities’ strengths through “objective indicators,” including the number of university faculty who have won prestigious prizes and the number of articles university researchers have published in academic journals.
