Twelve games into his 19th season behind the Cornell bench, head coach Mike Schafer ’86 has been the leader of the men’s ice hockey program for nearly as long as some members of this year’s freshman recruiting class have been alive. A former defensive standout during his time as a player, Schafer transitioned to coaching directly after graduating and assumed the head coach position during the 1995-96 season.

In addition to the usual crop of statistics thrown around about his tenure here — five ECAC championships, nine NCAA appearances, one Frozen Four appearance — Schafer reached the 350-win mark during the current season with the Red’s 4-2 victory over Princeton in early November.
