This week, we at The Sun are furthering our commitment to strong, digital journalism by launching a new version of CornellSun.com. Designed by the Institute for Nonprofit News, our new website provides a clean reading experience with a responsive web design, enhanced sharing tools and increased reporting capabilities. Accompanied with a new service provider that will provide more consistency to the site’s stability and up-time, we believe the new version of The Sun’s website will complement our 135-year-old print publication and allow us to remain innovative in the media landscape.
While our new website will afford us the opportunity to further our reporting capabilities, the challenge falls upon us to rethink how we cover news, sports and culture on the Hill and beyond. This semester, we are doubling down on efforts to be more effective in our reporting by focusing our staff on thinking with a digital-first mentality. The Sun has already made great strides towards this goal, with our news and sports departments placing an increased focus on online content in the last semester. Nonetheless, much more work still must be done.
Numerous individuals contributed to the success of this project, and their generosity must be noted. Haley Velasco ’15, former editor in chief of The Sun, and the leadership of the 132nd Editorial Board spearheaded initial efforts to redesign the website. Michael Morisy ’07, former managing editor of The Sun, as well as Leslie Steinau ’65 proved key liaisons to INN and oversaw much of the preparation work in making the website a reality. Additionally, the development of the site would not have been possible without the generous contributions of the Cornell Daily Sun Alumni Association and our loyal alumni base.
