Freshman goaltender Matt Galajda was named the Ivy League’s Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year and head coach Mike Schafer ’86 was named Coach of the Year on Thursday.

In his 23rd season as head coach, Schafer is the winningest coach in program history.

Joining the netminder and bench boss on the Ivy honor roll are sophomore defenseman Yanni Kaldis, a first-team All-Ivy selection for the second straight year, second team selections junior forward Anthony Angello and junior defenseman Alec McCrea and junior captain and forward Mitch Vanderlaan, who earned honorable mention.

Galajda was 7-0-1 in Ivy Play, posting a 1.55 goals against average.

In addition to winning Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, Galajda was unanimously named to the Ancient Eight first team.

Kaldis tied for the league lead in scoring from defensemen, posting eight points in Ivy contests. Angello’s eight Ivy goals — three coming in a hat trick at Harvard Jan. 26 — tied for the league lead. McCrea had five points in Ivy play, none bigger than his game-winning goal against Harvard with seconds to play Nov. 11. Vanderlaan, who the team hopes to have back from injury for the ECAC playoffs, tallied nine points in eight Ivy games.

Cornell was 9-0-1 in Ivy play, earning its first undefeated slate of Ancient Eight games since the 1995-96 season, Schafer’s first as head coach.
