LIAO | The Tragic Tale Of Lamar Odom

This past week, some tragic news hit NBA circles. Clippers forward Lamar Odom was arrested at 4 a.m. on Friday morning for a DUI charge after being missing for over 72 hours on an apparent cocaine-fueled bender. Since then, there were rumors of his wife Khloe Kardashian kicking Odom out of their house because he refused to go to rehab. Stories like this are usually very difficult to process; it’s very depressing to see anyone fall this deep into despair and really puts me at a loss of words. It’s even sadder for Lamar Odom because of the hand he was dealt in life.

LIAO | Summer Sorrows

After completing our final exams last semester, we all earned a well-deserved break. It seems as if the entire sports world went on the same hiatus. After very compelling NBA and NHL Finals, the realm of professional sports seems to have been put on pause. Next to nothing has happened since the finals and instead of focusing on the sports themselves, the media and the public have heavily scrutinized the many off-the-field incidents in which athletes have been involved this summer. The reason why sports are a multi-billion dollar industry is because of the competition on the field; a motivational background story for one of the players is nice once in awhile, but competition is why we watch.

LIAO | Liao Reflects On Sports In 2012-13

With just two days left of school, I was having trouble thinking of a topic to write about and instead reflected upon the last year of sports and what’s happened. What has justified by existence as a sports fan? What has made me laugh? Who deserves some recognition for some great achievements? Before long, I had accumulated a list of tens of things and thought that they all deserved a shout out for collectively making a great year of sports happen.

LIAO | NBA Playoff Predictions

Spring is in the air and that only means one thing; the NBA playoffs are about to start. Let’s not waste any time and jump right into a few predictions. Eastern Conference:

(1) Miami Heat vs. (8) Milwaukee Bucks

This is a mere formality. The Bucks are playing some good basketball, especially after the JJ Redick trade, but this is a bigger mismatch than a one-seed vs.

LIAO | NBA Power Rankings

Every year, the NBA starts getting serious when we leave for Spring Break. With less than 20 games remaining, every team is gearing up for the playoffs and making that final push…or starting to tank, whatever. Nonetheless, let’s take a screenshot of the NBA with a quick Power Rankings of the teams who still matter.1. Miami HeatThe past few years, the arguments for the best team and best player have both been good ones. This year, however, LeBron and the Heat have made the conversation a lot less fun.

LIAO | Nugget Nation

I’m a New Orleans Hornets fan; don’t ask. I love their uniforms, their players and generally everything about them. With the Hornets rebuilding, however, and hard to watch at times, this year I’ve adopted another team: the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets have everything it takes to be a team you want to cheer for: they’re a good team, they’re exciting to watch, and most importantly, they have the wackiest players in the NBA.Let’s start with the man, the myth, the JaVale. What’s there not to love?

LIAO | A Laker-less NBA Midseason Review

The NBA season is already more than half over, yet I feel like I don’t know what’s really going on in the league. The culprit for this is the Los Angeles Lakers, who have kidnapped the entire NBA news cycle with headlines about their struggles. Sure, the story is compelling, but it has still taken away from the other 29 teams in the NBA. Let’s explore some of these other stories as ESPN continues to update us on what Kobe Bryant ate for breakfast and how it will affect his relationship with Dwight Howard, his legacy and the fate of the world. Let’s start with today’s most prevalent story, one that can actually take headlines away from the Lakers: the Celtics losing Rajon Rondo for the season due to an ACL tear.

LIAO | Interesting Start to NBA Season

A month after the NBA season started, we know … barely anything. The teams we expect to be good – the Thunder, Spurs and Heat – are good, while most surprises – the Bobcats being above .500 and the Lakers having just a .500 record – have no chance of sustaining their pace. However, the things we have learned are certainly interesting. Firstly, Andrew Bynum’s off-the-court project: his hair. It’s a shame for the 76ers that he is now out indefinitely and he may not play a single game for Philadelphia – he’s a free agent at the end of this year – but his hair…wow.

LIAO | NFL Midseason Review

In the blink of an eye, the NFL is now more than half over. Although it’s hard to say exactly how the season will turn out, we do know more than we did at the start of the season. Some teams have clearly differentiated themselves from the competition and some trends have clearly formed. One huge trend has been the great play of the rookie quarterbacks in the league. We’ve heard gushing reviews of Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck, but even the quarterbacks taken later in the draft have played well all season. Russell Wilson has kept free agent signee Matt Flynn glued to the bench and has his Seahawks sitting at 5-4.

LIAO | The Many Faces Of LeBron James

When you look at LeBron James in a bubble, he is one of the most inspiring, great success stories in any field. Born to a 16-year-old mother and an absent, ex-con father, James grew up in seedy living conditions that I could not begin to fathom. Despite everything working against him, he picked up sports, worked tirelessly at his craft to escape poverty, became one of the most touted basketball players out of high school and fulfilled his seemingly endless potential to become the unquestionable best basketball player in this world. Yet, life is not lived in a bubble. People hate LeBron James and before his recent NBA Championship, they treated him as a cowardly, spoiled brat with no morals or ethics.
