The wind wasn’t the only challenge on the day, as the pin placement provided an added challenge — the need for constant focus.
An 18th hole birdie allowed senior Mike Graboyes to win the Princeton Invitational.
The fairways in Ithaca are still snowy, but the Red is eager to get its spring season started.
Two rookies head to nationals later this week, where they join seven other Ivy League fencers.
Entering the Ivy tournament as the fourth seed, the Red is two upset wins away from earning a March Madness berth.
As the regular season draws to a close, here are the scenarios in which the Red clinches a spot in the postseason Ivy League tournament.
“We need to get better as a team. We are a tougher group than we showed in this event and that will reflect after the next month of preparation.”
Bynoe and Ayeni have developed a strong sense of camaraderie that has allowed them to take on leadership roles, even though they are freshmen.
On Sunday, Cornell men’s tennis came up short in a close matchup with Clemson, falling to the Tigers by a score of 4-3. Just three bouts into a young season, head coach Silvui Tanasoiu says amping up the aggression will be a major focus for the team going forward. “Tentative tennis never works and our performance against Clemson is living proof of that,” he said. “We have seven young men very capable of imposing their will against their opponents and we need to do a better job preparing them going forward.”
Although the loss is not what the team was hoping for, freshman Alafia Ayeni dominated in straight sets and senior Daniel Grunberger continued his perfect season with a 7-5 victory in the third set. One of only three seniors on the team and the only fourth-year player to compete in singles against Clemson, Grunberger is doing his best to step into a leadership role both on and off the court.
“We really have to lock in on Friday and take it one day at a time. It should be exciting.”
