The Red lost a tightly contested Ivy opener against Penn (6-2, 1-0 Ivy), so it is critical that the team avoids an 0-2 Ivy start in a tightly contested conference.
Cornell won handily against Lock Haven over the weekend after losing to Stanford the weekend prior.
A strong defensive effort helped the Red take down Ohio University, but Cornell could not overcome an early deficit against Rutgers. After sweeping its opening weekend, the Red’s record now stands at 3-1.
Cornell Field Hockey (2-0, 0-0 Ivy) began its 2016 season with a dominant performance at home against Colgate (1-4, 0-0 Patriot) on Saturday. After a few sluggish opening minutes, sophomore forward Kate Fitzpatrick started the scoring on a rebound goal. “The first few minutes were a little shaky but then we started to settle down,” said Head Coach Donna Hornibrook. “Once we did, we started to move the ball that opened up some opportunities for us.”
Senior midfielder Elizabeth Horak added a goal right before halftime, but the Red really put things together in the second half. Cornell dominated possession and stifled Colgate’s offense, holding the Raiders to just three shot attempts.

Cornell will face their local rival, the Colgate Raiders on Saturday for the first game of the season. Colgate did not win a game last year, but already has a victory under their belt in 2016.
With the 2016 field hockey season fast approaching, Cornell is welcoming back a strong core of returning players, as well as a competitive freshman class looking to gain footing in a talented line-up.
Cornell women’s softball (9-32, 3-17 Ivy) finished its 2016 season with four straight losses to Princeton (21-25, 14-6 Ivy). The Red could not keep up with a Princeton offense that exploded for 30 runs over the four-game series. Nonetheless, the Red continued to battle, as it has all season long. “Obviously we didn’t get the results we wanted this weekend, but we fought hard until the end,” said senior outfielder Emily Weinberg. Cornell lost its first game on Friday, 10-1.
Cornell women’s softball had its best stretch of the 2016 season this past week, winning four of its past six games against Albany (24-11, 7-0 America East) and Columbia (11-26, 4-8 Ivy). Cornell (8-22,3-9) squared off against Albany on Wednesday, winning the first matchup, 6-3, and exploding offensively for a 14-2 victory in the second game. Dominant pitching from sophomore Maddie Orcutt and senior Meg Parker kept a talented Albany offense from tacking on runs. Both pitchers worked around several jams to prevent the Greyhounds from rallying. The Red also produced a solid defensive effort and continued its trend of constant improvement in the field.
