Sleep to Study Well!
November 16th, 2009I am writing this at about 9 A.M on Sunday morning and chances are most of the Cornell student body is still asleep. Exams really mess up my sleep schedule. Normally, I’m cozied up in my most glorious bed by 11 or 12 P.M but lately I’ve been looking at the clock for the last time around 2:30 A.M. And the sad part of it all is that my body won’t seem to let me sleep in. Some internal clock starts freaking out at 9 in the morning and won’t shut up until I’m in the shower. Read More
The Paradox of Bringing Detainees to “Justice”
November 16th, 2009On Friday, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that several Guantanamo detainees, including the alleged September 11th mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM), and the alleged architect of the USS Cole bombing, are to be tried in federal district court. I would like to provide some food for thought regarding the decision to try these detainees in federal court rather than by military commission and point out a paradox of bringing these detainees under the “rule of law.” Read More
Vampire ¡Fiestas!: Now with Time-traveling Robots?!
November 12th, 2009Last Time: Some Interesting Things happened? Then the best character died ... bummer! In this birthday-rific episode, entitled “162 candles,” it’s quite clear where everyone stands. Stefan like SO is Molly Ringwald, all pretending his little vampire heart doesn’t sing when he walks into a room and all tweeny eyes are on him. This is a fun game! Damon is sad braces-stricken Anthony Michael Hall wanting nothing more than to sniff Lexie’s underwear! Elena is that hot guy whose name is irrelevant! Read More
Donahue: Wroblewski Will Start For M. Basketball
November 12th, 2009Men's basketball head coach Steve Donahue announced that sophomore Chris Wroblewski will start over senior Geoff Reeves at shooting guard in the Red's season opener on Saturday. "In general, I think another ballhandler against a real athletic defensive team like Alabama probably helps us more off the start," Donahue said. Read More
M. Hockey's Offense Clicking Early
November 11th, 2009Though the men’s hockey season is still young, Cornell’s offensive explosion in its first three games has garnered some national attention and is reflected in the team’s climb up the polls to No. 3. Currently, the Red is first in the NCAA in offense, leading the way with 4.67 goals per game. The majority of that offensive success is due to Cornell’s prolific power play, which has converted 44.4 percent (8-for-18) of its chances, a mark that is also tops in the NCAA. Cornell’s goal-scoring surge is particularly surprising in light of Coach Schafer’s history of fielding physical, defensive squads backed by stingy goaltending. Read More
When the Rich Make War...
November 11th, 2009Jean Paul Sarte once famously said, “When the rich make war, it’s the poor who die.” And it’s true, to an extent. From the beginning of history to our modern conflicts, war has been declared and organized by people with power – and fought by those without. Read More
Rethinking College Rankings
November 10th, 2009From the time that college rankings began officially being published, Cornell University has consistently been ranked as one of the top universities worldwide. Students, faculty members, and alumni take great pride in knowing that the university not only excels in comparison to other American schools, but is also one of the best on an international scale. Until recently, all Americans, regardless of what college they attend or previously attended, have reveled in the fact that their nation’s university system is ranked as one of the highest in the world. Recent reports have shown that the United States is continually decreasing in higher-education performance levels compared to other countries. Read More

Men's Hockey Notebook: 11-9-2009
November 9th, 2009The southpaw The men's hockey team obviously has a number of talented freshmen, but one who really stood out this weekend was forward Greg Miller. Miller scored the last goal in the 6-3 win over Harvard, but his sweet lefty snap shot caught our attention earlier in the weekend. He has speed moving up the boards and he took two hard shots against Dartmouth on Friday, as well as a few on Saturday before his goal. Miller has been playing on the second line with junior forwards Patrick Kennedy and Riley Nash, so he should see plenty of scoring chances. Lynah Rink Cheer Tracker Friday night's game mostly saw the standard cheers from the Lynah Faithful, but as the Red pulled away late in the game, fans struck up a hearty "We want Harvard" cheer. Momofuku Noodle Night
November 9th, 2009You know the feeling. It’s two in the morning and all you can think about is Chinese takeout. You crave the salty and sweet combination that Asian food is renowned for. You crave the deep savory flavor of soy, which has recently been identified as “umami”. I have always found Asian cooking a little daunting. Read More
