A $5 million dollar gift given in honor of a recently deceased Cornell alumnus will be used to fund the first endowed professorship at the tech campus, the University announced last month.

Since ground broke on Gates Hall in March, professors said they are eagerly awaiting the new $60 million computing and information sciences building, which they hope will promote greater collaboration between the Departments of Computer Science and Information Science.

With a $10 million gift from John A. Swanson ’62 M.Eng. ’63 the College of Engineering will expand undergraduate opportunities in both academics and student organizations.

With the help of a $650,000 gift from recently deceased Prof. Emerita Helen L. Wardeberg, education, Mann Library and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences –– which will each receive half of the donation –– will be making adjustments to improve their services for the Cornell community.

An alumna donated $750,000 to create new scholarships for students studying agricultural sciences, an interdisciplinary major created in 2006 in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences.

A team of Cornell researchers recieved two grants, totaling $4.5 million, by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture Specialty Crop Research Institute in September to study grape breeding in the New York region.
