Cornellians visiting the Fall Creek Gorge trails will notice that they have undergone a makeover, as the first phase of a University plan to improve the safety of the trails was completed in late October.

Nate’s Run for Smiles, a five-kilometer race and mile-long children’s run held to raise money for charity, was hosted Sunday in memory of Nathaniel Rand ’12, a student who died after drowning in Fall Creek Gorge last summer.

Nathaniel Rand '12 and Stanislaw Jaworski, a graduate student visiting from abroad, died within hours of each other in the Fall Creek Gorge Saturday. The deaths were accidental and unrelated, officials said.

Ithaca is gorges. However, according to the city’s municipal code, it is in fact illegal to swim in Ithaca’s gorges. The University Assembly is now considering a resolution — proposed by the Codes and Judicial Committee (CJC) — to amend Cornell’s Code of Judicial Conduct so that the gorges on Cornell’s campus are off-limits as well.

At the assembly meeting last night, there was only enough time to briefly review the issue. The assembly will continue the discussion in its meeting next month.
