Cornell’s swim test requirement caught national attention Wednesday when it was the focus of a Wall Street Journal article that highlighted the decreasing number of universities that require students to swim laps in order to graduate.

The men's lacrosse team suffered a 12-7 loss at the hands of Notre Dame in the first semifinal match of the 2010 NCAA tournament at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.

The Statesman defense and junior goalie Max Silberlicht shut down the No. 2 offense in the country for an entire half on Saturday, but Cornell's eight first-half goals were enough of a cushion for the Red to get the 8-7 win in its last regular-season game of 2009. The 15 seniors on the Red's roster were treated to a win in their regular-season finale at Schoellkopf Field, pushing Cornell's record to 10-3, the fifth straight season with 10 wins. Hobart fell to 7-7.

Forsake slope day? Most students would say never, but members of the women’s lacrosse team are not most students. The players will be preparing for their final game of the season and Senior Day on Saturday at Schoellkopf field against one of their greatest rivals, Notre Dame.

“We’re really excited to play them,” said senior defender Kelly Hansen. “The Notre Dame team has taken the senior class out of the tournament twice. There’s a lot of animosity between us… it gets us ready for a strong fight,” she said.

From the looks of it, you’d think the devil was invited to speak at the University of Notre Dame’s graduation commencement ceremony. Then again, maybe some people believe he is, though I bet even Rush Limbaugh would find this a bit extreme. For commencement and graduation, most universities invite a distinguished individual to address the graduating seniors in order to provide them with words of wisdom and advice for the future. Who better for the task than the President of the United States? I am therefore bewildered that President Obama’s scheduled speech has been met with such defiance and outcry.
