Student Artist Spotlight: James Orlando
December 1, 2008 - 12:00amIt’s rare to find a student so passionate about his field that he started his career before coming to Cornell, but that is exactly what senior James Orlando did. Instead of coming to Cornell to figure out what he wanted to do with his life, he came to Cornell to perfect what he was already good at: photography. He also happens to have the perfect name for a photographer.
At 21, James has done photography in London, been a starving artist in New York City and been a congressional page at the White House. Oh yeah, and he teaches snowboarding on the side. Don’t worry; your life isn’t that boring.
Sun: Have you always been interested in photography?
Student Artist Spotlight: Jeffrey Connor and Bruce Hyde
November 10, 2008 - 12:00amAt first glance, Jeff and Bruce’s camaraderie (their senses of humor complement each other and they finish each others sentences in a way that makes them seem like they’ve known each other much longer than a few months) belies how passionately they play when on stage. Jeff is out of town a lot and is apparently homeless; Bruce, in a complementary way, came to Cornell to run track, and has since stayed, taking on the persona of a talented Van Wilder (at 25, he’s been at Cornell since 2005 and claims his date of graduation is 2012) who also happens to be a pretty talented poker player, and is using his winnings to pay tuition.
Student Artist Spotlight: One Trick Pony
Not Your Usual Pop Band
September 22, 2009 - 11:00pmOne Trick Pony is a band of contradictions: A practice room in a frat equipped with an $850 rug, a group of northern boys with elements. of southern flair. But when seniors Matt Schmohl, Joe Stevens, Brendan McDonough and Tim Sommer get together to make music, their efforts. are precise, focused and illuminate a panache for songwriting that has steadily evolved over their years as students. In their practice room in the basement of the Delta Upsilon frat house, The Sun was treated to an intimate look at a One Trick Pony practice.
