The New Look

Don't like the new look... EE Cummings already used the lower case construction to great effect; it's been done there and really doesn't fit into journalism, IMHO...

The old masthead has tremendous historical significance as a symbol and should't have been pushed into a slanted murky background (in favor of a san serif tag) like some thought that can no longer be recognized as either a dream or a true recollection.

Also, I know it's the beginning of the school year but there's not one dateline 8/22/06 story on today's splash page (it's 8/22/06 today...).

I assume the paper was actually published today, right? We're not all in Ithaca any longer...

Keep up the good work.

News briefs

The use of rotating news briefs makes it really hard to read anything that is below it. The jumpiness is disconcerting to say the least.

I agree (in response to News Brief)

We are currently in the process of solving that problem. Unfortunately, it turns out to be more complicated than anticipated.

Website problems

I do not see any option for printer friendly versions of these articles? Am I just missing it. It seems like an important option ot have. Also, the site seems extremely slow every morning regardless of the computer I'm using. Is there a server problem?

A very good point (in response to Website problems)

You make a very good point. We had some load issues, but that has been fixed recently. As per printer friendly versions, that is a very good idea and we will look into that further

The website looks like crap,

The website looks like crap, it has redundant navigation, many aspects do not work, and there is less information on the front page. Furthermore, my inquiries have gone unanswered, and the forums do not work correctly.

thank you for your comment (in response to The website looks...)

If you have any specific suggestions, we would really appreciate it. We were having some technical problems earlier this term, but most of them are fixed now. If you find any more specific problems, please send them my way :)

The new site is really slow.

The new site is really slow. This is the only way I read the paper (I'm a young alum), and it'd be great if you could speed it up a bit.

more details please? (in response to The new site is really ...)

We were having some load issues beginning of this term, but they should be fixed now. When/Where are you usually experiencing this problem?

The website load issues are

The website load issues are NOT fixed. This is the slowest loading website I have ever found. If you think they are fixed, look again. That all said, I appreciate the effort, and look forward to them actually being fixed.

Very unhappy with the new

Very unhappy with the new layout. News are not updated daily and makes the few ones available very difficult to access.

The New Sun Webpage

In a word, terrible! I don't enjoy coming to this page anymore. It used to be a way for me to keep up with my alma mater, but this new format is dull, empty, and frustrating. The Sun's former Webpage was a lot like "USA Today" - you knew what was happening at Cornell by just being on the first page. What happened? Why this change?

Put it back the way it was.

I can imagine you take some pride in what you do and it isn't pleasant to hear uniform criticism of the new site design. Please recognize, however, that all of these complaints (which mine echo) are not simply a rejection of the new for rejection's sake; the new layout is frustrating, difficult to use, and lacks a sense of aesthetics. I would strongly suggest reversion to the original.

This website

Has been completely destroyed. Completely unusable.

poor web site

I used to read your web site almost daily. This new format is a very bad change. It is way too slow to use with any sanity. The new look is juvenile. I don't understand why something so nice had to be changed in the first place. Just very disappointing from start to finish. Admit your mistakes and start over.

Why ruin something that was actually useful?

The last time I visited the site was months ago. I don't know what has happened or who is responsible. I don't care. Can you just please put the site the way it was from this summer? This site is SLOW, I can't find anything, the features are are mostly missing, or work poorly. The front page doesn't even load in Firefox. The navigation is a disaster. Many images are broken such as the front page icons. I just can't begin to explain how frustrating this is. CAN YOU JUST PUT IT BACK!?

CDS Loading Problems/ "The New Look" Won't Work

The "NEW LOOK" web page will not "hold" the unabridged CDS (Cornell Daily Sun) Section Titles & subject headings for more than a few seconds for Apple/Mac users.

On this constructive comment column, other alums/students have recommended using the original CDS site that worked, which is the "correction" course the university & Daily Sun editorial board should initiate. It's obvious that this CornellSun.com website (which get a D-minus grade in '06 compated to the CDS site previous "A" grade for nearly a decade) won't work.

It appears apparent after 100 days that the CornellSun.com new site is relatively non functional compared to other sites for other leading colleges & universities.

It seems to be becoming a big embarassment for Cornell overall (relative to other Ivy League, "Seven Sisters" & other leading worldwide academic institutions), which is really regrettable ---given the great journalist talent on the Cornell Daily Sun's team this year and historically, for so many years.

In conclusion, the CornellSun.com site worked well & wasn't broken from 1996-2005, and now, the Cornell Daily Sun "broke" its excellent legacy website, which was not broken before. Someone should have figured out that it's easier to improve/enhance an existing site, rather than start all over again this semester with a bad "blueprint" to build a very bad CornellSun.com daily website.

cornell daily sun

There is this box on the left (news, sports, opinion, etc)that blocks half of the second paragraph on every page. Very annoying. Please......give us the old website back.

The New Look

Summary: I like it.

Well, since starting this thread back on August 22, 2006, I'm impressed with your (the Sun management and staff) responsiveness and results.

The current evolution of the website, from my perspective, is very nice; clean, easy to use and appealing.

Thanks for your efforts.

The "New" Look

Well, it appears as if this "new" look is here to stay despite almost uniform (and very vocal) opposition. As a young alum, I try and read the Sun online several times a week to keep up-to-date on what's happening at Cornell, but I find the current format disappointing in almost every aspect. There is too much empty space, things are poorly laid out, load times are incredibly slow and overall it just looks amateurish. Take one look at ANY of the other Ivy League daily websites and you quickly realize that their format is much cleaner, tighter, navigable and aesthetically pleasing. I only hope that the website will receive a complete overhaul once the semester is over and the paper is on summer recess. If anyone is actually paying attention to these comments, I implore you to redo the website; so much of the good work done in generating the content at the Sun is completely failed by this terrible online format.
