• Columbia began its first-ever ColumbiaHarlem Festival of Global Jazz Wednesday — that means that Columbia this weekend will be ripe with films related to jazz, lectures on jazz and, of course, performances of the music itself. Here’s a snippet of all the jazz music events occurring over the weekend: David Murray and Kidd Jordan Jazz Allstars will be playing at the Creole Restaurant & Jazz Café, located at 2167 Third Ave. in New York.

• No, Northeastern is not an ivy, but it’s in Boston — sharing a city with Harvard is close enough. Northeastern University is hosting the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the John Coltrane Memorial Concert in the university’s Blackman theatre in Ell Hall, located at 360 Huntington Ave. in Boston. There are shows Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively. John Coltrane was a major figure in modern jazz.

• Bring in the Autumnal Equinox — twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of darkness — with the Autumnal Equinox Bash at AS220, a non-profit community arts center located at 115 Empire St. in Providence. The bands playing at the Bash include Howl, Prurient, Dave Andrae and Cardinal. Two of the bands, Howl and Prurient, lie in the heavy metal / noise genre. Cardinal performs modern-day operettas and Dave Andrae, an artistic jack-of-all-trades will perform a piece entitled “Fuck the 30 Bus.”

• The Yale Cabaret is celebrating its 40th anniversary season this year. This weekend’s performance, at the Yale Cabaret Theatre, located at 217 Park St. in New Haven, is titled An Evening of Cabaret and is a show of musical, burlesque and vaudeville acts. Students from the Yale School of Drama will perform in the show.
