Fiber Science and Apparel Design majors want you to know that despite putting on the Cornell Design League fashion show each spring, their major isn’t all glamorous.

“We don’t just sit around reading magazines,” said Laura Kung ’10.

While the students may not be dealing with problem sets and essays, they have weekly assignments to create clothing such as skirts and shirts. In fact, students spend so long perfecting their projects that they have been known to keep toothbrushes and face wash inside their “second home” at Martha Van Rensselaer Hall.

The major was formerly known as Textiles and Apparel but was renamed Fiber Science and Apparel Design this year in order to sound more “legit,” according to some students. The new title is more inclusive of those who concentrate in fiber science, a field that deals with the more practical applications of fibers such as protective army gear or bicycle material.

With only about 130 undergraduates in the mostly-female major, the students are very close-knit and form great friendships with their professors. Kennen Dietz ’09 said it was “a little awkward” walking into his first class freshmen year and discovering that he was the only guy in a class of 30 girls.

“But, hey,” he added, “I’m not complaining!”
