Recap: Legal Action Sparks Community Outcry
November 16, 2007 - 12:00amThe case at the front of the recent racism charges against the Ithaca City School District stems from Amelia Kearney, whose black daughter was physically and emotionally abused by her white classmates two years ago at the district’s DeWitt Middle School. Kearney is bringing her case to the Tompkins County Human Rights Commission with the allegations that the school district is racist for not helping Kearney’s daughter.
On Nov. 9th, a community meeting was held in Ithaca to develop a plan of action. Parents were instructed how best to support, protect and advocate for their children. They also planned what actions they will take against the school district in the future, including asking the district to institute diversity training. The next meeting will be held Dec. 6 at 6 p.m.
