Empire State of (a Mixologist's) Mind
November 5, 2009 - 3:39amThe Big Apple. The City That Never Sleeps. Concrete jungle where dreams are made. No matter what you call it, New York is the greatest city in the world and nothing else can compare.
In the words of Frank Sinatra, “If I can make it there, I can make it anywhere.” Everyone who is anyone has made it in New York, and the same holds true for the cocktail community. If you can’t find an audience for your drink in New York, nobody should be drinking it. In honor of the Yankees taking home the World Series,* I invite you to celebrate the city I love by drinking your way through a booze-filled tour of each of the five boroughs.
Manhattan
3 oz. whiskey
1/4 oz. sweet vermouth
As the most populated county in the United States, Manhattan is essentially the heart of New York City and where many New Yorkers live, work and drink. The name Manhattan derives from the Lenape Indian label Manahactanienk, which literally translates as “the island where we all became intoxicated.” To commemorate this fact, I give you the Manhattan cocktail, one of the world’s most requested drinks.
Combine your ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice and stir gently. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a cherry.
Bronx
2 oz. gin
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
1 oz. fresh orange juice
The birthplace of hip-hop, home of the one and the only Yankees (BOOOOO PHILLIES!) and the childhood neighborhood of yours truly, the Bronx is a diverse, passion-filled and funky borough. Surprisingly, its namesake drink is fairly subdued, but delicious nonetheless.
Fill a shaker with ice and ingredients and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add orange peel for garnish.
Ride the 6 train with a buzz.
Brooklyn
2 oz. whiskey
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1/8 oz. maraschino liqueur
1/8 oz. Torani Amer
Currently the home of Hipster Nation, Brooklyn is an ever-evolving cultural center that has provided the world with some of the greatest pop culture phenomena. The Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood (affectionately known as Bedstuy), singlehandedly changed the hip-hop world, giving us The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Aaliyah, Lil’ Kim, GZA, Mos Def and Spike Lee’s classic Do The Right Thing. Other notable Brooklyn figures include Larry King, Adam Sandler, Barbara Streisand and Judge Judy. Next time you bust out that Miley Cyrus / B.I.G. mash-up at a party, make sure you’re drunk off of Biggie’s favorite drink.
Stir the whiskey, vermouth together in a mixing glass filled with ice. Add a few dashes of maraschino liqueur and Torani Amer. Serve in a chilled cocktail glass.
Brooklyn — we go hard.
Queens
1/2 oz. gin
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
1/2 oz. pineapple juice
Serving as the bridge to our Long Island brethren, Queens is the easternmost of the five boroughs and the westernmost portion of Long Island. Home to Sesame Street, Citi Field and 50 Cent, Queens is fairly suburban with a hint of danger (50 got shot nine times there. No biggy). The same goes for the Queens cocktail, which seems fairly standard until BAM! — pineapple juice is thrown in the mix.
Shake your ingredients together in a shaker filled with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a pineapple slice.
Staten Island
3 oz. coffee vodka
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
Staten Island is the least populated of the five boroughs. There’s a reason for that.
Stir coffee vodka and vermouth in a mixing glass filled with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Proceed to boot drink from off the side of the Staten Island Ferry.
