The best of the best in college a capella will be under one roof — Ithaca College’s Ford Hall — this weekend. The Mid-Atlantic quarterfinals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella is on Saturday. While most of these groups probably cannot hold a candle to Cornell’s finest, it will probably be a cool competition to check out. The battle begins at 8 p.m.
The Tioga County Council on the Arts presents the second installment of its “Always on Sunday” concert series this weekend. Take a guess which day it is. The “Swing Street Jazztet” will be performing a show called “The History of Jazz.” I’m not sure how many people make up a jazztet, but they will be playing hits from a range of eras, including the 20s and earlier all the way up to the 60s and later. The show starts at 3 p.m. If you enjoy it, return again next week … and the week after that.
For the fourth year in a row, the Central New York Jazz Arts Foundation will combine efforts with Syracuse University to present a jazz cabaret concert in honor of Black History Month. Los Angeles vocalist Barbara Morrison will perform, along with the CNY Jazz Quartet, Black Celestial Choral Ensemble, Windjammer, and a variety of S.U. singers. The show is at 4 p.m. on Sunday in the Schine Underground.
Rochester punk rock band The Sunstreaks will play in their hometown’s Walter Street Music Hall tonight. With high-energy music, these rockers should have no problem getting the crowd on its feet. The amps go on at 6 p.m.
