Raditude

“We watched Titanic and it didn’t make us sad,” lead singer Rivers Cuomo croons to his teenage girlfriend. The only problem with this scenario: Weezer has eight albums underneath their belt and Cuomo was certainly not a teenager in 1997. On their latest record Raditude, Weezer has embraced a younger, fresher sound with tunes that could have easily been sung by today’s younger generation.

Case in point: Weezer collaborates with Lil Wayne and R&B producer Jermaine Dupri on the synth-driven, club track “Can’t Stop Partying.” A combination that would normally sound like a misfire actually results in a stroke of genius. Someone was clearly catching on when I heard the track at a frat’s after-hours over the weekend — considering the song was not released yet, this is a good sign. The other Dupri collaboration, “Let It All Hang Out” has more of a rock influence with a tinge of R&B, but also achieves the same effect.

Although Weezer experiments with R&B on the aforementioned tracks and even Indian music on “Love Is The Answer,” — the album’s only overblown mess — most of the tracks are classic Weezer but with a younger orientation. “Put Me Back Together,” an album highlight, resembles the sound of “Island in the Sun” and “Pork and Beans.” Weezer’s trademark quirky lyrics are also maintained, including lines like “Your Mom cooked meatloaf even though I don't eat meat/I dug you so much, I took some for the team.” The first half of the album is the perfect blend of old Weezer and new influences, but in the second half the album tapers off.

Honestly, I was never much of a Weezer fan. Compared to their previous material, Raditude is catchier because of new appeal to younger audience. If this is due to Weezer “selling out” by enlisting Lil Wayne and Britney Spears producer Dr. Luke, so be it. The ends justify the means — and I wouldn’t be surprised if you hear “Can’t Stop Partying” at frats or even on the radio in the near future.
