The Wicker Man
September 11th, 2006Can you name a remake that is better than the original? The odds are against it. Recent remakes like The Omen, Psycho, The Manchurian Candidate, or When a Stranger Calls do not hold up to the original. The only remake that is generally considered superior is the Humphrey Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon (and if anyone has actually seen the original 1931 version, I am very impressed). Read More
Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man
September 11th, 2006The marriage of nostalgia and fresh interpretations of classic songs gives Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man a quality that borders on the ethereal. Elements of the present are incorporated into the music of another generation while contemporary artists reflect on the music of a man collectively referred to as a legend. Read More

A Life in the Year: The Other Cornell
September 10th, 2006No. 2 Wednesday, 11:15 a.m. Nick Lambrou. Collegetown landlord. Eddy Street. "It's easy to knock landlords, but people don't realize what we have to put up with," said Nick Lambrou, managing director of Lambrou Real Estate, while on an inspection of one of his company's 80 apartments on Eddy Street, where the previous tenants had left a beer-soaked carpet. "I don't have to replace the carpet," said Lambrou, whose father Gus started the family business in 1962, "but of course I will. I care about my students. And I care about Collegetown. People don't realize that I am part of Cornell, too. I’m trying to uphold students to its standards." Read More

Hilariously Terrifying
September 7th, 2006I read Heidi Julavits’s 2003 novel, The Effect of Living Backwards, in between transatlantic flights this summer. The second flight, my return leg to the U.S. from Paris, took place just one day after British bobbies announced a new terror plot. Planes were stalled all over Europe, security tightened and tourists were angered as Louis Vuitton carry-ons were handed over for Ziploc baggies. Read More
The Mountain Goats' Get Lonely
September 6th, 2006The Mountain Goats’ , which is really just one man, John Darnielle, umpteenth release called Get Lonely is packed with imaginative and literary lyrics forming a string of interesting stories as each track plays on. With lyrics as pensive and introspective as they are softly sang, this album demands a large amount of patience to really be enjoyed. Read More
Mod Clockwork Orange
September 6th, 2006There must be something in the water of British suburbia that produces phenomenal musicians; either that, or, more likely, the combination of rain, boredom and a tambourine is just the right ambiance to birth aspiring rock stars. Well, Jim Noir is no exception. Read More
Cornell Loves to Recycle!
September 6th, 2006The ’90s marked an era when clothing styles gained notoriety for unflattering proportions and tacky details. The typical adult woman favored tapered, waist-high mom jeans that eagerly transformed regular hips into blooming ones, whilst the preteens (yes, that’s all of us) experimented with fashion that screamed more “lost-little-child” than chic and unique.
