Movies and Music Come Together

Emma Banks  —  May 4, 2007

Body:

Bands with real musical skill and talent are able to create a depth of emotion in their music while remaining true to their technical training. Two such bands from Austin, Texas, performed Saturday night at the combined Fanclub and Cornell Cinema event in Willard Straight cinema.

Big Red Bucks? No Big Red Deal!

Charlie Niesenbaum  —  May 4, 2007

Deckhead:

Adventures in Snacking

Body:

If you are Soojeong Catherine Son ’09, I know what you are thinking: “Great! Another ‘good night and good luck’ column, thanking everyone, reflecting on past experiences and generally wasting space in the newspaper.” Well think again, Son! (See what I did there? Son is her name, but also a good nickname for a random doubter. Cute, huh?) This column is going to be chock-full of very useful end of the year tips.

Test Spin: Nine Inch Nails

Megan Altman  —  May 3, 2007

Deckhead:

Year Zero (Nothing Records)

Body:

The new Nine Inch Nails’ politically conscious sixth studio release seems more focused on delivering its intense conspiracy message about the end of the world in year 2022, aka Year Zero, than it is on the production of intense music.

Yay or Nay?

Sammy Perlmutter  —  May 3, 2007

Deckhead:

Arctic Monkeys: Daze takes sides

Body:

After releasing the fastest selling debut album in British history just last year, the Arctic Monkeys must have felt an unprecedented amount of pressure while completing their newest record. But the Monkeys don’t really care at all. Instead of having their guard up, the band forcefully attacks.

Delphia Style

Deckhead:

Custom hoodies from PhillY

Body:

Philadelphia has long been a mecca for people dictating what is cool, hip, in style and most importantly, fresh. Throughout the ’90s, the words of one such Philadelphia native became the new Bible for a generation: “In West Philadelphia born and raised, on the playground was where I spent most of my days. Chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all cool. And all shootin’ some b-ball outside of the school.” While the neon tracksuits and Reeboks which Will Smith sported on the Fresh Prince are no longer in style, another source for fashion has emerged from the same immortalized city: meet Delph.

Test Spin: Dr. Who Dat?

Mike Gelinas  —  May 3, 2007

Deckhead:

Beat Journey (Lex)

Body:

From deep under the covers of obscurity, Dr. Who Dat? (aka Jneiro Jarel) drops Beat Journey, an instrumental clumping of jazz and hip-hop. The Doctor, fluent in both genres, is gentle and accessible; his sophistication could take him much further away.

Yay or Nay?

Arctic Monkeys: Daze takes sides

I wanted to like this album more.

That said, “Fluorescent Adolescent” is a stunning poison. It will freeze your muscles and heat your blood while your brain focuses in on two things: your most wistfully nostalgic memories in a mental Powerpoint complete with one of the most beautiful melodies modern rock has to offer. Alex Turner’s voice bursts with yearning, the first time he conveys an emotion deeper than spitting disdain for pretentious and/or fake compatriots of his at bars and clubs. This song single-handedly makes the entire album worth it, but you can’t help but yearn, as much as Turner does, for more tracks like this one.
