Convocation Includes Sun, Speeches and Record Class Gift

"Beautiful weather, terrific outcome of the senior class campaign, great speaker," said President Skorton summing up the Convocation ceremony of Cornell's 139th Commencement held Saturday at Schoellkopf Stadium. "What we had is exactly what I was hoping for."

A Convocation ceremony volunteer, Kathaleen Mason, said that Convocation organizers were expecting 15,000 attendees.

Seats on the field at Schoellkopf — not the bleachers in the stadium above — were reserved for trustees, speakers and performers and the families of those involved in the ceremony, according to Mason.

Police Identify Woman Found Dead in Gorge

The Ithaca Police Department said yesterday that the woman who died by falling into Cascadilla Gorge Thursday was Laurie B. Hickey, a 36-year-old woman from Auburn.

Witnesses told the IPD that they saw a woman climb onto the railing of the bridge and fall into the water below around 8 p.m. Thursday.

Cornell will graduate about 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students this weekend at its 139th Commencement.

Soledad O'Brien, a CNN special correspondent, will speak at Convocation at noon today in Schoellkopf Stadium. The Stadium opens at 10 a.m. In case of severe weather, Convocation will take place at Barton Hall.

Two famous Cornell alumni and former Sun editors are competing for the honor of having a street named after them, The New York Sun reported today. The street may also be co-named.

Kurt Vonnegut Jr. '44, a former Sun associate editor and assistant managing editor, lived on East 48th Street near Second Avenue in Manhattan before dying on April 11. E.B White '21, a former Sun editor in chief, lived on and wrote about 48th Street in the 1920s and 1930s.

Tickets for Dalai Lama Events Go On Sale May 23

C.U.'s two conservative newspapers end rivalry

After a rivalry lasting several years, Cornell’s two conservative newspapers, The Cornell American and The Cornell Review, have recently united as one publication. The merger was a mutual agreement between members of both staffs during recent years when each side decided that the rivalry was outdated.

“In the last year or so, [the rivalry] kind of settled down, because the people who were originally responsible for it had graduated. There was really no more reason for conflict or competition,” said Greg Isaacson ’07, former editor-in-chief of The Review.

Atkind, a fifth-year Cornell senior, is suspected of beating and pouring bleach on Princess, a Labrador-pit bull mix in early March, leaving her with little or no eyesight for life.

Collegetown 'Tree Sculpture' Removed

The Cornell grounds department removed the art installation outside of Sheldon Hall yesterday. Part of the installation caught fire on April 22, but the fire was quickly extinguished by a passing Ithaca police officer. The Ithaca Fire Department said at the time that the fire had probably not started on its own.
