Cause of Death for Lim ’13 Remains Undisclosed
October 23, 2009 - 1:35amThe circumstances surrounding the death of Boon Jim Lim ’13, who was found dead in Clara Dickson Hall Monday, are not being released in accordance to the wishes of his family, according to the University.
“In respect to Boon Jim, we don’t want to release any details,” said Zach Helsper, residence hall director for Dickson. “They’re asking that a lot of this be kept private. It’s all in conjunction with what the family wants.”
Though frustrating for a University community facing its third death this semester, the confidentiality is in accordance with the wishes of Lim’s parents. Originally from China, the majority of Lim’s family is settled in Malaysia.
“Everyone wants to know the cause of death, but they said it is a confidential issue,” Ilyas Kuzembayer ’13 said.
Students interviewed described Lim as a reserved but kind-hearted student.
“Lim was a Malaysian government scholar … the Malaysian government sponsors his education here through a merit-based scholarship,” said Esther Lim ’11, who is of no relation to Boon Jim, but knew him through the Malaysian Students Association, of which she is vice president.
Other students who knew him made note of Lim’s work ethic and gregarious spirit.
“Boon Jim was always a friendly face at our meetings,” said Ken Hui Fu, public relations director of the Malaysian Students Association. “He was all-around a great freshman to have in our club. I have much fonder memories of him from the times we had dinners together with the Japanese Language House. We would try hard to converse using Japanese, a language we both loved but weren’t proficient at. It was fun and challenging trying to overcome our natural instincts to revert back to English or some other language we use in Malaysia.”
University officials say that Lim’s family may not ever want the cause of death released and that certain parts of the investigation are still pending.
