According to a recent announcement by the Office of the Assemblies, 3,944 students voted in the recent student trustee election. All undergraduate and graduate students were eligible, so about 20,000 people could have voted. The official winner was Kate Duch ’09.

On Sunday afternoon, the waters of Cascadilla Creek were filled with thousands of rubber ducks as part of the Seventh Annual 4-H Duck Race, a fundraising event for the 4-H Youth Program of the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County.

The co-recipient of the 1989 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for studies on the genetic basis of cancer and former director of the National Institutes of Health appeared as part of the Atkinson Forum in American Studies, which has brought noteworthy visitors, including Coretta Scott King and John Updike, to the Cornell campus since March 2002, thanks to a gift from David and Pat Atkinson.

After several weeks of campaigning and voting, Kate Duch ’09 has been elected as Cornell’s newest student trustee.

Unlike last year, no candidates were disqualified for violating campaign rules.

“I’m really thrilled and honored to have the support of so many members of the Cornell community,” said Duch, a sophomore in the College of Industrial and Labor Relations from Buffalo.

The Hindu Student Council (HSC) hosted Holi 2007 on Saturday with food, music and lots of colored powder in the Anabel Taylor courtyard. Despite the less than perfect weather, nearly 600 students and Ithacans turned out for the event.

Cornell Changes OmniRide Policy

Cornell announced on Friday that it will provide free OmniRide bus passes to student holders of B, MW, FH and SE parking permits in 2007-08, two days after the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly contended at a University Assembly meeting that the new OmniRide student program would unfairly limit the mobility of the graduate and professional student community. Under the original program, holders of B, MW, FH and SE parking permits would have been charged an additional fee of $100 for an OmniRide bus pass.

Trumansburg Man Indicted on Sexual Assault Charges

James E. “Jimbo” Thommen, 37, of Trumansburg, was arraigned on Friday in Tompkins County Courthouse on charges of felony sexual and physical assault. Thommen was arrested by the Ithaca Police Department on March 21 in an Ithaca resteraunt after allegedly assaulting a woman in his home and later in an Ithaca area cemetery, and was indicted on Friday on 23 counts of sexual assault, kidnapping and illegal possession of a weapon.
