To the editor: ‘Human factor’ is a bad factor

To the Editor:

Re: “Students Express Indignation Over SAFC Procedures,” News, Feb. 6

In regards to the article “Students Express Indignation Over SAFC

Procedures,” it seems that the author, and for that matter members of the student community, have forgotten the purpose the SAFC serves. The organization is entrusted with over a million dollars of the student activity fee, and it would be creating an extreme injustice if the “human element” mentioned in the article becomes a factor of funding. This “human element” gives way to a much more likely outcome than “understanding,” which is an increase in human error and favoritism of certain organizations.

By following rules and guidelines, the Commission is able to best serve the community by only funding events that are well thought out, well documented, and that are sponsored by an organization that has proven it is led by fiscally responsible, action minded individuals. Not every event can be funded, and as such these procedures act as a funneling process to fund events that will definitely succeed and that will have the greatest impact on the Cornell population overall.

The SAFC has never been an organization to garner the respect of the student body despite all of its hard work — that is one change the SAFC could definitely use.
