To the Editor: Wasting energy all night long

Re: “Lights Out,” Opinion, Oct. 19

As a member of the staff community who frequently works late at night in my overnight-locked up building, I regret the policy that hall lights must stay on all night. It seems such a waste, but I am literally not permitted to turn off the lights when I leave.

This is considered a public safety mandate, something that your editorial did not address. I believe the critical balance between safety and economy could be maintained by the installation, especially in overnight-locked buildings, of LED nightlights or motion-detecting sensors that turn lights on when there is movement in the area.

Thank you for bringing this important issue to the light.
