Tennis Hits the Road to Compete at Top Eastern Invitationals
Men to compete at National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows
September 23, 2009 - 11:00pmThis weekend Cornell Tennis heads out of Ithaca to compete. The women’s team heads to West Point, N.Y., for the Army Invitational. The men will be in Flushing Meadows at the National Tennis Center playing on courts still warm from the U.S. Open.
The women’s team will be taking their first road trip of the season this weekend as they head to Army. The team looked strong last weekend, with standout freshman Christine Ordway taking the Flight A singles title at Cornell’s Fall Invitational. With five solid recruits and a strong group of upperclassmen, the Red is looking stronger than ever going into this weekend’s invitational.
In the Footsteps of Giants: The men’s team will be playing on the courts where the U.S. Open was played only weeks ago.
“It’s still too early to tell how good the freshman are in comparison to the upperclassmen, but we’ve definitely got a lot of talent,” Ordway said.
This is the first year in recent history that the women have travelled to Army for their invitational. Army will be hosting a field of over 30 top teams from the east. The Red will get its first good look at the competition this weekend, and should prove to be a test of its mettle. Army will have a much tougher draw than Cornell’s invitational, and the women will be pushed hard in their matches.
“I’m really excited to head out to Army … I think it’ll be good for us to face some tough competition this weekend, ” Ordway said.
The men are coming off a successful weekend at Princeton where junior Andy Gauthier really stood out. Gauthier took the Flight B singles title in a tough draw against many Ivy foes.
“Andy is really on top of his game right now, I’m really looking forward to watching him play this weekend at the tennis center,” junior Jeremy Feldman said.
The Red will be playing on the same courts that Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro played on only weeks ago. The invitational is expected to attract some of the top teams on the east coast including much of the Ivy League and top state schools like Maryland.
“The competition will be tough but I think we’re all feeling really good right now and are excited to go to New York,” Feldman said.
The Red got a good look at Princeton and Columbia last weekend at the Princeton Invitational. Penn’s latest import, a transfer from UCLA, excelled at the tournament and has brought a new level of strength to Penn’s squad. Columbia has returned its entire starting lineup and has brought in a solid freshman class to help take the Lions defend their Ivy League title.
This weekend the Red will get a look at Yale and Harvard. Yale recruited a number of five star freshmen according to Feldman, making them a team to look out for.
“I can say with confidence that seven of the eight teams are looking really tough right now, it is definitely going to be a tight race,” Feldman said.
Feldman and Gauthier are expected to do well this weekend as they face more Ancient Eight competition. According to Feldman the duo has its sights on a berth in the NCAA tournament for doubles.
The Red will be in New York City Friday through Sunday.
