Yale Invite, Individual Events Help Tennis Prepare for Ivy League Season
October 1, 2009 - 11:00pmTomorrow the men’s tennis team will travel to New Haven, Conn., to play in this year’s Yale Invitational. While the Red has yet to play in a team event, it has taken full advantage of this long string of individual events to prepare for what will be a difficult road ahead this spring. After putting together a strong season last year, junior co-captain Jeremy Feldman recognizes that nothing will be handed to him and his teammates this season.
“Just because we had a good season last year, doesn’t mean we’re entitled to have a good season this year,” Feldman said.
When asked about his goals for the Invitational, Feldman took the emphasis off of himself saying, “The team’s No. 1 goal is to win the Ivy League title, and make the NCAA tournament.”
Head coach David Geatz agreed with his co-captain’s goals.
“We want to keep getting better each week,” he said.
Geatz, entering his second season as head coach of the men’s team, led the Red to a 14-5 record last season (5-2 Ivy), a marked improvement from the previous season. He has been especially impressed with the improvement his team has shown from last season, and looks forward to see if this year’s freshmen have what it takes to play at this level.
“Our new freshmen need to show that they can compete in the Ivy League,” Geatz said.
Feldman hopes that he can help his new teammates get acclimated to playing in the Ivy League.
“The goal as captain is to show the freshmen what it really means to work hard…once you get to college, it’s all about the team,” he said.
Geatz raved about the job his captains have done so early in the season.
“They take responsibility …they’re great students, great leaders and they push their teammates,” he said.
Feldman attributed this early success to the level of toughness being exhibited throughout the team.
“As a team everyone is tougher mentally…everyone’s ability to play at a higher level consistently has been improved,” Feldman said.
The Red will look to maintain that high level of play over the weekend at Yale, before heading off to New Hampshire for the Regional Championships in two weeks.
