Women’s Tennis Travels to New York to Compete in Invitational
October 8, 2009 - 11:00pmAfter a strong start to the individual events portion of the schedule, the women’s tennis team looks to get back on track this weekend in Flushing, N.Y., at the BJK College Invitational. The Red was dominant in sweeping the major awards at the early season Cornell Fall Invitational; however that success did not follow the team to the Army Invitational two weeks ago.
The Red, behind head coach David Geatz, travel to this weekend’s invitational with the mindset that each member of the team will focus on a specific part of their game that needs improvement.
Junior Leah Seyburn stressed the importance of each individual player being able to correct the mistakes that plagued the team at Army.
“We’ve been working really hard on [eliminating] errors and problems we had with our game at the Army tournament, and … came up with things we want to improve upon,” she said.
Seyburn will host the team this weekend while it plays in the BJK Invitational, which is located near her home. She believes this will be a great way for the team to bond, adding, “the team’s really excited about it.”
The team is looking to recapture the success it had at the Cornell Invite, which was highlighted by Flight A singles champion freshman Christine Ordway and Flight B singles champion senior Susan Sullivan.
Seyburn, who won the B singles consolation bracket, was joined in the winner’s circle by the Flight A doubles team of junior Sinziana Chis and freshman Kristin Lim, as well as Flight B freshmen doubles partners Geraldine Leong and Kirsten Kohagen.
While this portion of the tennis schedule consists solely of individual events, there is still a very team-oriented feel to how the Red is approaching this weekend’s event.
“There’s a lot of good team spirit going on; people competed really hard and worked very hard,” Seyburn said when discussing how the team’s performance at Army has affected its approach for the BJK Invitational.
The Red will have to continue the hard work, as this weekend’s event will showcase the best competition that college tennis has to offer.
After the team suffered through a difficult season last year (6-14, 2-5 Ivy) it was announced that Geatz would become the head coach of the women’s team while maintaining the same position with the men’s team. After a strong season in his first year as the men’s coach, Geatz will look to get the women’s team back on track as well.
The Red and Geatz continue the circuit of individual play after this weekend’s BJK Invite, heading to New Haven, Conn., for this year’s ITA Northeast Regional tournament beginning on Oct. 23.
