Men’s tennis put the finishing touches on a strong fall season over the weekend at the Cornell Invitational, taking the Flight A singles and doubles titles. This was the final event of the fall season, which is composed solely of individual events. The team event portion of the schedule will begin in February.

Junior Andy Gauthier capped off his impressive season winning the Flight A championship in straight sets over teammate junior Jeremy Feldman, 6-2, 7-5. Gauthier dropped only one set during the course of the tournament, continuing the strong play that made him a semifinalist in the Regional Tournament. Gauthier’s one hiccup came in his semifinal match against Binghamton’s Gilbert Wong, after he dropped the second set, 7-6. Gauthier persevered, however, and won the third and final set, 10-6. Feldman also had a smooth road to the finals, winning all three of his matches in straight sets before falling to Gauthier in the finals.

Feldman and Gauthier paired up in the Flight A doubles tournament, and made it to the finals where they were scheduled to play teammates senior Jonathan Fife and sophomore Evan Bernstein. However, the match was not played due to time constraints. Fife and Bernstein had an easy road to the finals that included victories over Buffalo, Binghamton and Army. The Gauthier-Feldman team defeated Case Western, Buffalo and Binghamton on its way to the finals.

The Red also performed well in B singles, highlighted by semifinal appearances from senior Ashish Bandari and junior Mirza Klis. Klis fell to eventual champion Alex Haggai of Binghamton in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-10.

In C singles senior Richard Offutt advanced to the semifinals before retiring due to injury while the score was tied 4-4 in the first set. Freshman Peter Nawara was ousted in the first round, 6-2, 6-1, while freshman Jared Karson also fell in the opening round of the Flight D bracket. Freshman Charles Quay had a strong run through the Flight E semifinals. However he was defeated by eventual champ Gustavo Villares of Duquesne, 6-4, 6-4.

The success of Gauthier and Feldman will be crucial to the Red achieving its goal of winning the ever-elusive Ivy League title for the first time in Cornell’s history. Second-year head coach David Geatz and his squad will resume their quest for the title on Feb. 6 when the winter season opens in Ithaca.
