Sports Brief

Body:

For the first time since Star Wars ruled the galaxy — not to mention the box office — and Chris Kane headed up the men’s lacrosse team’s defense while Bob Henrickson streaked up and down the sidelines of Schoellkopf Field, the Red find themselves atop both the USILA coaches poll and the Nike/Inside Lacrosse poll.

Wrestling Team Mantra: Mental Toughness

Tim Kuhls  —  Mar 13, 2007

Body:

T-minus two days until the Division I NCAA wrestling nationals. Weight training has been cut back, drilling has been waned and practices have been shortened to periods of less than an hour in length. If anything takes precedent in the days leading up to wrestling’s version of March madness, it is the focus spent on keeping athletes happy and mentally fresh. Come Thursday, the men will be separated from the boys inside the Palace at Auburn Hills, Mich., and what will create this division is the result of a season long process set on developing mental toughness.

Twice last year, the men’s hockey team reached overtime in the ECACHL quarterfinals. Both times, it eventually found a way to win. But this is a different year and a different team, and when Cornell’s opening ECACHL quarterfinal game went into overtime on Friday, it didn’t last very long.

M. Lacrosse Wins Battle of New York Powers

Cory Bennett  —  Mar 12, 2007

Body:

This time of year, Cornell students are generally beginning to froth at the prospect of filling out a bracket for the NCAA basketball tournament while watching Cornell’s hockey team make yet another run at the ECAC title (well, most years). Lost in the shuffle is the beginning of the lacrosse season. Saturday, the No. 3 Red made a heavy bid to get noticed as it took down No. 9 Army, 7-4 — the second top-10 team Cornell has slain in as many weeks.

Wrestling’s Arnone Battles Injuries, Sickness

Tim Kuhls  —  Mar 12, 2007

Body:

Bouts with mononucleosis, separated shoulders and broken fingers — all are things of the past for No. 13 ranked sophomore Josh Arnone, who will make his first-ever appearance at the NCAA national tournament on Thursday after finishing third at the EIWA tournament on March 3. After not being able to wrestle until late December because of sickness and then foregoing the entire month of January because of injury, Arnone has since defeated four ranked wrestlers in accumulating a 9-3 record at 184 pounds. Despite his most recent success, Arnone is just happy to be competing.

Baseball Takes Two of Three

Lance Williams  —  Mar 12, 2007

Body:

The baseball team showed flashes of dominance in its three games in Philadelphia this weekend, clawing back to .500 with a doubleheader sweep over La Salle on Saturday before losing a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth to fall to Villanova, 10-9, yesterday morning. Against La Salle (5-6), the Red (3-4) rode the strong performance of senior pitcher Jim Hyland to take the opener, 7-3, and continued its momentum by jumping out to an early 4-0 lead in Game 2 that it would never relinquish, beating the Explorers 6-4. Yesterday, Cornell showed its resiliency by battling back from a four-run deficit to take a 9-8 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but could not keep the Villanova at bay in the bottom half of the inning, ultimately losing, 10-9.

W. Tennis Remains On Winning Streak

Devon Goodrich  —  Mar 12, 2007

The weather is heating up, and so is Cornell tennis. In another weekend full of matches, the men defeated Georgetown, 6-1, and gave No. 56 Maryland a run for its money in a closely contested 4-3 loss, stretching their record to 7-2. The women narrowly beat UMass, 4-3, by claiming four singles matches after dropping the doubles point to start off the match. In doing so, the Red has kept its six-match winning streak and unbeaten spring season intact.

Red Earn All-America Honors

Harrison D. Sanford  —  Mar 12, 2007

Body:

The Red’s last meet of the season, the NCAA Indoor National championships, culminated in impressive fashion as all four of its representatives placed in the top-5 of their respective events. Juniors Muhammed Halim and Rayon Taylor placed second and fifth in the triple jump, respectively. Senior co-captain Sarah Wilfred finished in fourth place in the high jump, while classmate and co-captain Morgan Uceny placed fifth in the 800-meter dash. All four return to campus as All-Americans, having played a part in Cornell’s best NCAA showing since 1997, when the women’s distance medley relay squad and Marc Duquella ’97 won All-America honors.
