Junior quarterback Jeff Mathews was named Ivy League co-Offensive Player of the Week and freshman running back Luke Hagy won his first award for Rookie of the Week.

Thanks to the two and the rest of the squad, the Red crushed Yale, 45-6, during the Homecoming showdown this past weekend. Cornell had its largest margin of victory in a series that dates back to 1946 and rushed 482 yards offensively.

In addition to his fifth Ivy honor while with the Red, Mathews had a great showing against Yale completing 29-of-39 passes for 340 yards with four touchdowns and an impressive zero interceptions. He also matched a school record by finishing his fourth straight 300-yard passing game and the eighth in his overall career. Mathews also moved up to third in on the school’s career passing yardage list with 5,964 yards.

Rookie Hagy had his own good showing on Saturday as he racked up 157 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 21 carries for 88 yards on the ground and became the first Red rushed to score two touchdowns since 2010.

Cornell will play away against Bucknell this Saturday to continue striving for an excellent rest of the season.
