Women’s Basketball Finishes Season With Two Losses

Cory Bennett  —  Mar 5, 2007

If someone had said at the beginning of the season that the women’s basketball team would finish its season with an 8-6 Ivy record, that person would have gotten a quizzical look. Still, after a weekend in which losses to Harvard and Dartmouth caused the Red to miss out on a chance at a WNIT bid — given to the team with the best record in each conference that does not earn an NCAA birth — and an outside shot at a share of the Ivy crown, it’s hard for the team not to feel disappointed.

Going into the match, the Red was 0 for 15 all-time against the Scarlet Knights. Despite the loss, the Red surpassed 190 for just the second time this season and improved its credentials for ECAC and national tournament qualifying.

One week after falling to Princeton by a three-point margin, the Red finished in first place among a 74 team field at the IC4A Indoor Track and Field championships held in Boston. It was Cornell’s first title since 1930 and the first time an Ivy League school had taken the top spot since 1972.

Softball Sweeps Four Games at George Mason Classic

Allie Perez  —  Mar 5, 2007

Body:

If this weekend’s results are any indication, the softball team is ready to pick up right where it left off last year and surge forward in its quest for the Ivy title. The Red — which finished one game out of first place in the Ancient Eight the last two years — showed few signs of rust as it swept all four of its games at the George Mason Classic in Fairfax, Va. this past weekend.

The baseball team kicked off its 2007 season with one win in four games against Bucknell this weekend in Philadelphia. On Saturday afternoon, the Red’s offense sputtered and the team dropped a pair of tight games to the Bison, falling 1-0 and 2-1. A day later, Cornell’s offense kicked into gear, splitting the doubleheader with an 8-4 win and an 11-7 loss.

Men's Lacrosse Beats Irish

If the men’s lacrosse team’s first game against Binghamton was a cupcake game, then Saturday’s game against No. 8 Notre Dame was like steak — tough, but still tasty if done right.

In only its third game of the season, No. 4 Cornell (3-0, 0-0 Ivy) used an 11-1 run against the Irish (2-1, 0-0 GWLL) to come out on top 13-8.

In a fitting end, senior tri-captain Andrew Naeve punctuated his career with 21 points to lead all scorers, while freshmen Louis Dale and Ryan Wittman chipped in 16 and 14 respectively.
