For men’s and women’s basketball players in the Ivy League, the only way it has been possible to participate in a postseason conference tournament has been to turn on the TV or sit in the stands and watch as their peers in every other Division I conference in the country compete for titles and bids to the NCAA championship tournament.

Losses come in all shapes and sizes. They happen by margins small and large, against teams strong and weak, in games that are relatively meaningless and in those that determine the success of a season. For the men’s track team, this past weekend’s narrow defeat was very disheartening.

Men’s Lacrosse Handles Rival Colgate

The men’s lacrosse team received a spark from an unexpected source yesterday as sophomore face- off man Tommy Schmicker scored the first two goals of his career, both on face-offs. His tallies helped Cornell top Colgate, 16-6, in a game in which Cornell overcame a 3-2 Colgate lead early in the second quarter.

Though the award show season has passed, hockey fans are just getting ready for their main event as the first round of the men’s ECACHL playoffs begin this Friday.

Coming off a blowout victory over Binghamton in its regular-season opener last Saturday, the men’s lacrosse team will turn around quickly as it hosts Colgate this afternoon. While the Red won its first game 19-4, the Raiders have won their two matches by scores of 19-4 and 14-5.
