Taking a short break from team competitions, freshman Tasha Hall and classmates Katherine Thompson and Sallie Dietrich headed to Denver, Colo. to compete individually in the Junior Olympic National Championships over this past weekend. Hall, who placed within the top-16 at nationals last year and third at the Montreal Junior World Cup, finished ninth out of 158 competitors in the Junior Division. Thompson, who placed 41st at last year’s Junior Olympics, placed 50th and Dietrich, who won the Heartland Circuit last year, finished in 72nd place.

Yes, the men’s hockey team did beat Quinnipiac 2-0 in probably its most important win of the season thus far, but the game I’m talking about did not take place at Lynah Rink.

Savoie Hits East Hill

Matt Savoie was in for a shock when he arrived in the East Hill this year. Hailing from predominantly flat Peoria in central Illinois, he had also spent much of his life on the smooth ice of the rink as a mainstay of American figure skating. But no athletic preparation could have prepared him for the slopes of Ithaca.

Varsity Teams Call Alumni in Annual Phonathon

Cornell athletes wrapped up their annual phonathons last week. Over 5,000 alumni, parents, and friends of athletic programs were contacted by Cornell athletes.

Each night for the past six weeks, Cornell athletes have manned phones in Ives 111 to solicit donations for their teams and connect with friends of their programs. Over 3,000 alumni pledged specific amounts of money to a team, including graduates as young as the class from 2006.

Wrestling Wins Fifth Consecutive Ivy Title

The wrestling team made room for another Ivy League banner inside the Friedman Wrestling Center this past weekend, as it captured its fifth straight Ivy title after sweeping Harvard and Brown by scores of 34-9 and 28-10, respectively.

Track Receives Three MVPs in Heps Tune-Up

In the final weekend before the Heps Indoor championships, the Red competed in an event to honor Marc Deneault ’01. The Marc Deneault Invitational, held in Barton Hall, honors former Red sprinter Deneault, who was victim to a fatal car accident seven years ago. Marc’s immediate family was in attendance, including his twin brother Richard Deneault ’01, who presented Meet MVP awards to three members of the Red.
