What Do Preseason Rankings Mean? Anything?

Just a week ago, Gardner-Webb’s men’s basketball team slaughtered Kentucky in Rupp Arena. Rivals.com’s preseason rankings had Kentucky at No. 27 to the No. 300 Bulldogs. Now I’m as far away from a math person as you could possibly get, but even I can tell that there’s a big difference there (or at least there’s supposed to be).

In the shock and surprise after the upset, however, I think people have been ignoring an important question. Think a second. What do those numbers actually mean?
