September 4th, 2008

The University’s response to a massive e-mail outage in June was inadequate and caused significant interruption to the business of the University, according to a report released last month. The unexpected and widespread e-mail failure prevented some members of the Cornell community from sending or receiving e-mail for as long as five days and caused irreversible damage to about 3,800 email accounts. Introducing the Big Red: Luke Siwula

Introducing the Big Red: Luke Siwula Fifth-year senior Luke Siwula (25) has one more chance to become one of Cornell’s top-5 rushers of all time. The tailback returns for another season after playing in only three games last year.

By Allie Perez
Red running back Luke Siwula has given his team the best possible gift — choosing to return to Schoellkopf Field for another season. The fifth-year senior from Cortland, N.Y., is No. 6 on Cornell’s all-time career rushing list and is 178 yards away from breaking the top-5. Winning the team’s Mr. Offense Award as a junior, Siwula came into his senior season set to shatter all of the program’s rushing records. Injury, however, took its toll, as he went down with an injury in the Red’s 45-7 win over Georgetown Sept. 29, in which he rushed for three touchdowns. Read More

How Gossip Girl Changed Marketing Forever (JK!)

September 4th, 2008

So Gossip Girl is back. And sure, it doesn’t have much of an effect on my life. But it’s back, and people are excited about it. In New York City, banners on top of taxicabs, posters at bus stops and giant billboards hanging from skyscrapers all featured shoulders-up shots of the Gossip Girl characters engaged in various sexually implicit positions — making out in the back of a car, having sex in a pool, etc. One ubiquitous catch phrase was emblazoned over each one of these snapshots: “OMFG.” Whatever you want to say about the show, you’d be kidding yourself if you didn’t admit that it’s pretty great advertising — concise, alarming and memorable. The ads demanded the attention of those walking by, and it got me thinking how marketing people might similarly employ obnoxious Internet vernacular to peddle other products. Read More

Bouncing Back From Wall Street Rejection

September 4th, 2008
So you worked 10 weeks for an investment bank this past summer. You hauled yourself to the office every morning only to return home at 2 a.m. You spent your days slaving on Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. You wrote weekly summaries on exotic derivatives and initial public offerings and pushed your way through the financial lexicon. Now, you don’t have an offer. Take a number. Read More

In America, We Do Not Apologize

September 4th, 2008
By Dmitri Koustas
Remember your tenth birthday, when you had chocolate all over your face and you despaired because the chubby kid had a bigger piece of cake than you? The cake had your favorite radioactive Ninja Turtle on it, but one of your “classmates” (he wasn’t even your friend, but your mom knew his mom) took the piece of cake you wanted — the one that had Michelangelo’s nunchucks on it. Instead, someone handed you a piece with the turtle’s crotch. Read More

In Defense of Subprime

September 1st, 2008
By Lee Blum
Both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain have attacked everybody from hedge fund managers to oil companies for the doldrums that our economy is in. The root of all evil, as many would have us believe, is the subprime mortgage market and predatory lenders. Yet I believe subprime is an instrument of financial innovation that is useful. Read More
