Leading Nat’l Astronomers Converge on C.U. Campus

Nearly 800 scientists from across the nation who descended upon Ithaca for the 40th annual Astronomical Society planetary meeting last weekend. This is the first time the University has hosted the meeting since 1983. Cornell is one of the world’s leading institutions in planetary science, a distinction which enabled the University to bring the planetary meeting back to Cornell after a 25-year hiatus, according to Prof. Jim Bell, astronomy, co-chair of the meeting’s organizing committee. Bill Nye ’77 Gives Planet Tour to Honor Carl Sagan

As the tour guide for this Sunday’s Sagan Planet Walk approached the nearly 500 tourists, scientists, students and Ithaca residents gathered on the Commons, women shrieked and flashbulbs snapped. Donning a polka dotted red bow tie, sunglasses and a boater hat, Bill Nye ’77 “the Science Guy” was not taken in by the hype.

Tompkins Ranks in Top Five For Most Tax-Exempt Land

Thirty-nine percent of Tompkins County is tax-exempt, making it one of the five counties in New York State with the most tax-exempt property in 2008. Of the $3.9 billion exempt, $2.7 billion is representative of land occupied by institutions of higher education.

Prior to Saturday’s loss in Cambridge, Mass., the football team had stayed close in all of its three games, bouncing back to win each game at the wire. Saturday at Harvard, however, the game was essentially decided before halftime, as fifth-year quarterback Chris Pizzotti and the Crimson rolled over the Red, 38-17. Cornell’s defense gave up big plays — seven plays for 20 yards or more — but the defense wasn’t the only problem with the Red early on. The offense couldn’t manage to get a first down until the second quarter. Read More
