Cross Country Teams Open Season At Familiar Ithaca Moakley Course

Following up on the consistent momentum that they have been building over the past couple of years, the men’s and women’s cross country teams will open their seasons today against Army by hosting a head-to-head race at the Ithaca Moakley Course. With strong performances in last year’s Ivy League Heps Championships and some successful individual NCAA qualifiers, the runners are aiming to recapture the Heps title in 2009.
Nevertheless, the Red will be without some of their top runners, including junior Adrien Dannemiller, who is taking a semester abroad in Switzerland, and senior Peter Loy who is out of commission with a knee injury. However, the runners are optimistic about their 2009 campaign regardless of the obstacles that they will be facing.

Senior Long-Distance Runner Competes at NCAAs

Senior Zac Hine finished 84th among the 252 runners who competed at the NCAA championships yesterday. Hine was the lone Cornellian to qualify when he received an at-large bid after he placed 12th at the Northeast Regional Championships. Hine completed the 10,000-meter race in 30:46.2. His splits were almost identical as he completed the first half of the race in 15:22 and the second half of the race in 15:24.
Oregon senior Galen Rupp won the race with a time of 29:03.2. Along with winning the individual title, Rupp led the Ducks to a National championship. Iona and Stanford finished second and third, respectively. Harvard sophomore Daniel Chenoweth finished first among Ivy League participants and 42nd overall.

Red Tops Ivy Foes in Final Events of Cross Country Season

The women’s cross country team had a triumphant ending to its season on Saturday. The Red placed just ahead of Ivy foe Harvard to win the ECAC championship for the third time in four seasons.
In a field consisting of 11 teams and 97 runners, Cornell placed five runners in the top-21 en route to victory. The Red’s team score of 67 points was 12 points ahead of Harvard and 20 points better than any other team in the field.[img_assist|nid=33837|title=Sprint to the finish|desc=The women’s cross country team edged Harvard by 12 points to take home the ECAC championship for the third time in four seasons.
