If you’re keen to discover the tastiest menu items and fit in like a true Cornellian, know that you’re not alone. Thankfully, I’ve compiled a list of the top five hidden gems at Cornell eateries, complete with specific recommendations on what to order, as not all menu items are created equal.

What’s better than reaching into a warm bag of Dos Amigos tortilla chips on a cold Ithaca night? How about enjoying your Mexican cuisine in the warmth of a new indoor location? Dos Amigos, a flavorfully creative and exceptionally executed late-night Mexican food truck currently situated on the corner of Dryden and Eddy in Collegetown, is expanding into a brick and mortar location at 304 College Ave — previously Stella’s restaurant — this upcoming winter/spring season.
Franny’s food truck is a campus eatery located behind Sibley Hall. Being a non-traditional campus eatery, many may argue against Franny’s quality of food and service as compared to other dining options on campus. In any case, Franny’s is certainly the least well-known dining option on campus. First and foremost, a trip to Franny’s requires a long walk from main campus. Furthermore, Franny’s lacks covered seating, an off-putting concern during the cold winter season. With such stiff competition among dining eateries across campus, it is difficult to understand why one would choose to eat at Franny’s.

Three years after graduating Cornell, Irene Li ’15 has already made it onto Forbes’ 30 Under 30. Li operates Street Kitchen, a food truck, and Mei Mei restaurant. Both business ventures are located in Boston and have an emphasis on sustainability and transparency.

And while all the items on the Dos Amigos menu are spectacular, a bevy of new artists have risen to newfound stardom, and multiple albums have been released since 2015, when the truck first hit Ithaca’s roads and found its permanent resting place in front of Cascadilla. The debate between food trucks and local restaurants has been heating up recently, as food truck owners urge the City of Ithaca to relax restrictions on their trucks and restaurant owners accuse food trucks of policy violations. Under the current policy, food trucks may not operate closer than 200 linear feet from the nearest brick and mortar restaurant. However, many of these food trucks only begin operation late at night to avoid violating policies.
