Head and Heal was created in 2017 after co-founders Karli Miller-Hornick ’11 and Allan Gandelman were inspired by the health benefits of CBD and decided to invest their farm in the industry. “We didn’t really trust any of the products out there,” Miller-Hornick told The Sun, “so we wanted to make a product that was safe, and also accessible.”
Lack of sleep, headache, stress and anxiety: ask almost any Cornellian and they will tell you that these are the most common ailments plaguing the student population. By coincidence, these same illnesses are purportedly ones which can be treated with cannabidiol, or CBD, a substance extracted from the leaves of the cannabis sativa plant. Until a few months ago, CBD medicines were only available in niche online stores and some alternative medicine shops. But with the passage
of the 2018 Farm Bill and the subsequent passionate embrace of the cannabis industry by farmers, entrepreneurs and investors, one can find CBD everywhere from Wegman’s to GreenStar to CTB, and now, at the Cornell Health Pharmacy. Cornell Health Pharmacy manager Tracey DeNardo told The Sun back in April that the pharmacology team was planning on doing a review over the summer to determine which CBD drug companies’ products, if any, they would sell at the campus pharmacy.
Similar conversations are happening at café tables across New York. The lucrative potential of hemp is bringing people together: “Investors and businesspeople together with the farmers out there getting their hands dirty. [Hemp is] the best opportunity farmers have had in their lifetime. I don’t know of another crop as lucrative.”
Plant Science 4190: Cannabis: Biology, Society and Industry will be offered in Fall 2019 by Prof. Carlyn S. Buckler, plant science. The course will explore the history, culture, breeding, horticulture, legal issues and challenges associated with cannabis.
Hemp products dominate the “technical and industrial fiber production, healthy oil production and whole grain and gulled grain food and snack products,” Smart said.
